How Nutritious Whole Foods can Strengthen Your Immune System in Challenging Times
In these times, when we need our bodies to be at their best to be ready for this virus, it is more important than ever that we feed our bodies with nutritious whole foods.
I acknowledge that being locked at home and the anxiety caused by the uncertainty in this situation can lead us to poor food choices. But we should focus on foods that come from the ground or from animals, foods that haven’t been heavily processed. Avoid things that came in packets, that are full of preservatives and stabilisers that you cannot even pronounce. ( more to come on how to read food labels…) Focus on fresh fruit and vegetables, meat and fish (if you are not vegetarian/vegan), legumes and whole grains.
You should aim to get all your produce certified organic to ensure you don’t put in your body nasty chemicals like weed killers, pesticides, etc…
A lot of people is not be able to afford to buy everything organic. If I had to prioritise what food to buy organic, I would chose fish and meat. Why?, you ask?
Fruit and vegetables get sprayed with pesticides and other chemicals but with a good clean in water and vinegar and a brush, you can get out most of them that are in the surface.
With animals is different. Animals are bio accumulators, which means they accumulate inside pesticides from the food they eat, antibiotics they get fed and other chemicals that they are exposed to. That goes directly into your body when you eat their meat. Find a good butcher that sells organic grass fed meet or a fish shop that sells wild caught fish. Or alternatively get in touch with a farmer that grows organically, sustainably and ethically.
If things go south and at some point we don’t even have access to fresh produce, I would consider organic green juice powders as an insurance policy to get all the nutrients we need.
